The Finished Project

Outdoor living that actually gets used.

A concrete patio turns unused backyard space into something you spend real time in — a defined area for outdoor dining, grilling, or sitting outside. Done right on a proper base with correct drainage slope, it adds to the property and holds its surface without constant maintenance.

Residential

Outdoor living concrete built to last through KC seasons.

A concrete patio connects indoor and outdoor living space. It should drain away from the house, handle foot traffic and furniture loads, and hold up through repeated freeze-thaw cycles without scaling. Those three things — drainage slope, base prep, and appropriate mix design — are what we address before any finish conversation happens.

We install new patios on bare ground, add patios to existing concrete flatwork, and replace old patios that have cracked, settled, or no longer drain properly. Finish options include broom texture, stamped and colored concrete, and exposed aggregate.

Common Situations

When homeowners start a patio project

  • Adding outdoor living space to a backyard, side yard, or rear of home
  • Replacing an old patio that is cracked, settled, or draining poorly
  • Extending an existing patio or connecting it to a new structure
  • Building around a new deck, pergola, firepit, or outdoor kitchen
  • Upgrading a gravel or paver surface to permanent concrete
  • Replacing a pool deck or adding outdoor flatwork near a pool

Technical Factors

What goes into a patio that lasts

01

Drainage Slope

A patio should slope at least 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the house. Water that runs toward the foundation creates drainage problems, basement moisture issues, and slab edge freeze damage.

02

Base Preparation

Patio base requirements are lighter than a driveway but still matter on KC clay. Proper compaction and 3–4 inches of gravel base prevents settlement in wet-dry seasonal soil conditions.

03

Expansion and Control Joints

Control joints are placed to manage where the slab cracks. Expansion joints are used where the patio meets the house foundation or other concrete structures. Both prevent uncontrolled cracking.

04

Finish and Sealing

The finish affects traction, appearance, and maintenance. Stamped and stained finishes require periodic resealing — especially in KC, where deicer exposure and freeze-thaw degrade unsealed surfaces faster.

Lee's Summit / KC Context

Patios and clay soil — what changes in Lee's Summit

On expansive clay, patios near the house are particularly vulnerable to movement where the subgrade transitions between protected (under the house) and exposed (in the yard) zones. We design the base and slope to accommodate that transition. In KC winters, deicers applied to patio surfaces without proper sealing cause surface scaling that looks like freeze-thaw damage but is really chemical deterioration — easily preventable with the right finish and sealant schedule.

What We Handle

Patio finish options

Broom Finish

Standard broom texture provides slip resistance and a clean, neutral look that fits most outdoor settings. Easy to maintain and available with edging and joint patterns.

Stamped Concrete

Patterns stamped into fresh concrete — slate, stone, cobblestone, wood plank, and others. Paired with integral color or release agent for a premium decorative finish.

Exposed Aggregate

The paste is washed from the surface to reveal the stone aggregate below. Durable, slip-resistant, and distinctive. Works well for patios where texture is prioritized.

Stained or Colored

Integral color (mixed into the concrete) or acid/water-based stain applied after curing. Adds depth and tone to any base finish. Requires sealing to maintain appearance.

Brushed or Salt Finish

Salt finish creates subtle indentations in the surface for texture. Brushed finishes vary in coarseness. Both work well for pool surrounds and areas where slip resistance matters most.

FAQ

Common questions about this service.

If your question isn't here, call us. We'll give you a direct answer.

(816) 608-7761
How thick should a concrete patio be?
Standard residential patios are poured at 4 inches. This handles normal foot traffic, patio furniture, grills, and similar residential loads. If you plan to park a vehicle or place very heavy objects on the patio, we'd spec 5–6 inches.
Can you match the concrete color or texture of my existing slab?
An exact match to an existing concrete slab is difficult because concrete weathers and changes color over time. We can get close, but we'll be upfront if a perfect match isn't realistic. A full replacement of adjacent slabs avoids this issue entirely.
How do I protect a concrete patio in KC winters?
Seal the patio before winter, and avoid using rock salt as a deicer directly on the surface. Concrete-safe deicer alternatives like calcium magnesium acetate are much less damaging to sealed surfaces. Resealing every 2–3 years is a reasonable maintenance schedule for patio concrete in this climate.
How long does a concrete patio last?
A well-installed concrete patio on a proper base should last 25–30 years or longer in Kansas City conditions. Early failure almost always traces to base prep shortcuts, poor drainage, or lack of sealing — not the concrete material itself.
Can you add lighting or heating to a concrete patio?
Conduit for electrical runs can be placed before the concrete pour if you're planning to add lighting later. Radiant heating systems can be installed before the pour as well. These need to be planned and confirmed before the forms are set — not added afterward.
